  • UAE Small Business Relief in 2026: Eligibility and Filing Still Matter

UAE Small Business Relief in 2026: Eligibility and Filing Still Matter

Small Business Relief (SBR) can reduce the Corporate Tax compliance burden for eligible UAE resident persons. Under the current FTA summary, a resident person may elect for the relief for a tax period where revenue is no more than AED 3 million in that period and in all previous tax periods, subject to the detailed conditions. The relief is available only for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026 under the relevant Ministerial Decision.

    Important limits

SBR is an election, not an automatic exemption from every Corporate Tax obligation. A Qualifying Free Zone Person and a member of a multinational enterprise group with consolidated revenue above AED 3.15 billion cannot elect under the FTA summary. Choosing SBR also affects the availability of other exemptions, reliefs and deductions for that period, and transfer-pricing obligations are not erased: the arm’s-length principle still applies.

    Do not skip the return

The FTA has specifically reminded eligible taxpayers that they must submit the required simplified Corporate Tax Return within the statutory deadline. Keep revenue calculations and supporting records, test prior-period eligibility, make the election correctly, and diarise the filing date. If a previous period exceeded the threshold, assess eligibility carefully rather than relying on the current year alone.

Read the FTA Small Business Relief conditions and its September 2026 filing reminder. Rules are period-specific; get advice if your circumstances are complex.

  • UAE Corporate Tax Return Deadline: How to Count the Nine Months

UAE Corporate Tax Return Deadline: How to Count the Nine Months

UAE Taxable Persons generally must file their Corporate Tax Return and pay Corporate Tax due no later than nine months from the end of the relevant Tax Period. The deadline follows the entity’s tax-period end; it is not one universal date for every UAE company.

    Example for a 31 December year-end

The FTA has stated that a Taxable Person whose financial year ended on 31 December 2025 must file and pay by 30 September 2026. A business with a different financial year-end will generally have a different nine-month deadline. The FTA also notes that exempt persons required to register must submit annual declarations within nine months of the end of their financial year.

Plan the close before the deadline

    • Confirm the registered Tax Period and year-end in EmaraTax.
    • Close ledgers and reconcile bank, VAT, payroll and intercompany balances.
    • Prepare the taxable-income reconciliation and gather supporting records.
    • Allow time for review, corrections and payment processing; do not rely on a last-day submission.

Small Business Relief does not mean ignoring the deadline: the FTA has said eligible persons must file the required simplified return within the prescribed timeframe. Always check current FTA notices and the deadline displayed for your account.

  • UAE Free Zone Corporate Tax: Why 0% Is Conditional

UAE Free Zone Corporate Tax: Why 0% Is Conditional

A UAE Free Zone company should not assume that every item of income is taxed at 0%. The preferential rate is available to a Qualifying Free Zone Person only on Qualifying Income and only while all relevant statutory conditions are met. Other taxable income may be subject to the ordinary Corporate Tax rules.

    What needs to be tested

Review the entity’s legal status, qualifying activities, substance, audited financial statements, customer and counterparty types, transactions with mainland or overseas parties, excluded activities and the applicable de minimis conditions. Keep evidence of how each revenue stream is classified. Free Zone licensing or incorporation alone is not enough to determine the tax result.

    Check the current decisions

The Ministry of Finance announced Ministerial Decision No. 229 of 2025, replacing the earlier decision on Qualifying and Excluded Activities and clarifying the scope of certain activities. The detailed rules can change, and the classification of a particular service or transaction requires a fact-specific assessment.

Before applying a 0% rate, map income by activity and counterparty, confirm the current Cabinet and Ministerial Decisions, and obtain professional review where needed. Do not use this general summary as confirmation that a particular company qualifies.

  • UAE Corporate Tax for Freelancers and Sole Establishments

UAE Corporate Tax for Freelancers and Sole Establishments

UAE Corporate Tax can apply to a natural person carrying on a Business or Business Activity in the UAE when the relevant business turnover exceeds AED 1 million within a Gregorian calendar year. This is a turnover test for the natural person’s business activity, not a general tax on an individual’s salary or all personal income.

    Income streams treated differently

The FTA says wages, personal investment income and real-estate investment income are not considered Business or Business Activity for this test. Whether a particular activity is a business, and how turnover is measured, depends on its legal and commercial facts. Sole establishments owned by a natural person may need to be considered together under the applicable rules.

    Practical steps for independent professionals

    • Separate business receipts from personal income in the books.
    • Track turnover by calendar year and retain contracts, invoices and bank evidence.
    • Check the applicable registration deadline if the threshold is exceeded.
    • Keep business expense records and assess VAT obligations separately.

Do not confuse this AED 1 million Corporate Tax registration threshold for natural persons with the AED 375,000 VAT mandatory-registration threshold. They measure different things and apply under separate regimes.

  • UAE VAT Registration Thresholds: AED 375,000 and AED 187,500

UAE VAT Registration Thresholds: AED 375,000 and AED 187,500

For a UAE-resident business making taxable supplies, VAT registration is generally mandatory when the value of taxable supplies and imports exceeds AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months or is expected to exceed that amount in the next 30 days. Voluntary registration may be available when the relevant taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500 under the same look-back or forward-looking tests.

    Use the right calculation window

The threshold is not simply based on a calendar or financial year. Keep a rolling 12-month schedule and document expected contracts or orders that could cause the next-30-days test to be met. Certain supplies may be excluded or treated differently, so validate how each transaction is classified before including it.

    Special cases need attention

The FTA notes that a non-resident making taxable supplies in the UAE may have a registration obligation regardless of these thresholds if no other person is responsible for accounting for VAT on those supplies. Group structures and multiple sole establishments can also affect the calculation.

Registration applications generally need to be submitted within 30 days of becoming required to register. Monitor the position regularly and keep the turnover schedule with invoices and contracts. VAT registration is separate from UAE Corporate Tax registration.

  • UAE VAT Return Deadlines: Prepare for the 28th-Day Due Date

UAE VAT Return Deadlines: Prepare for the 28th-Day Due Date

The Federal Tax Authority’s guidance states that a VAT Return and any payment due must generally be received no later than the 28th day following the end of the relevant Tax Period, or by another date directed by the FTA. If the date falls on a weekend or national holiday, the deadline is extended to the first business day thereafter under the applicable guidance.

Start with your assigned tax period

Many registrants have quarterly periods, but the FTA can assign a different period. Check the period shown in EmaraTax and on the VAT registration records rather than assuming every business files quarterly or on the same dates.

A monthly routine reduces quarter-end pressure

    • Reconcile sales invoices and credit notes to the sales ledger.
    • Reconcile purchase invoices, import records and eligible input tax.
    • Check VAT codes, place of supply, tax rates and any reverse-charge entries.
    • Investigate differences between accounting revenue and VAT return boxes.
    • Submit and pay with time to resolve portal or bank issues before the due date.

Keep the filed return, calculation and supporting schedules together. If a return needs correction, follow the FTA’s current rules for voluntary disclosures or amendments instead of silently changing prior-period records.

  • UAE VAT Tax Invoices: Timing and a Practical Review Checklist

UAE VAT Tax Invoices: Timing and a Practical Review Checklist

A VAT-registered business making a taxable supply generally needs to issue and deliver a tax invoice. Under the general UAE VAT rule, a registrant must issue a tax invoice within 14 days from the date of supply determined under the VAT law. The Executive Regulation in force on 27 September 2026 keeps that general period and provides exceptions: a simplified tax invoice must be issued on the date of supply, while a summary tax invoice must be issued and delivered within 14 days after the end of the calendar month in which the supplies occurred. Cabinet Decision No. 149 of 2026 was published by the FTA on 10 September 2026 and is stated to take effect on 1 October 2026; businesses should check the amended regulation and any later FTA directions for supplies on or after that date.

    Review the invoice fields

Depending on the type of invoice and transaction, check for the required supplier and recipient details, Tax Registration Number where applicable, a unique sequential invoice number, issue date, supply date if different, description, amount, VAT rate and VAT amount. Foreign-currency invoices can require additional AED and exchange-rate information.

Set up controls, not just a template

    • Use an approved numbering sequence and prevent accidental duplicates.
    • Make invoice timing part of the delivery or billing workflow.
    • Link credit notes to the original invoice and retain evidence of the adjustment.
    • Review cross-border and special transactions against current FTA guidance.

The regulation currently published by the FTA, including the amendment effective 1 October 2026, makes it especially important to apply the right timing rule to each invoice type. This checklist is not a complete legal template and should be checked against the applicable transaction and date.

  • UAE VAT Input Tax Recovery: Match Costs to Taxable Business Activity

UAE VAT Input Tax Recovery: Match Costs to Taxable Business Activity

VAT charged on a business purchase is not automatically recoverable. The FTA explains that input tax can generally be recovered where it relates to taxable supplies made or intended to be made by the VAT registrant, subject to the VAT Law and its exceptions. Costs linked to exempt or non-business activities may not be recoverable, and mixed-use expenses can require apportionment.

    Build evidence around each claim

    • Retain the tax invoice or other evidence accepted under the rules.
    • Record who incurred the cost, what was purchased and how it supports the business.
    • Identify whether the cost supports taxable, exempt or non-business activity.
    • Use a documented, fair apportionment method where a cost is shared.

    Reconcile before filing

Compare the purchase ledger and VAT control account with the VAT return. Investigate unusual input-tax movements, duplicate invoices, credit notes and costs posted to personal or mixed-use accounts. Apply any specific restrictions and current FTA clarifications before claiming.

The treatment is transaction-specific, and FTA decisions issued in 2026 address verification of certain supplies. Businesses should check current legislation and guidance rather than rely on a generic rule of thumb.

  • UAE VAT vs Corporate Tax: Two Different Returns, Two Different Calculations

UAE VAT vs Corporate Tax: Two Different Returns, Two Different Calculations

Businesses often manage UAE VAT and Corporate Tax together, but the taxes have different bases, events and reporting requirements. VAT is charged on taxable supplies and imports under the VAT rules. Corporate Tax is generally calculated on taxable income for a Tax Period after applying the required adjustments to accounting profit or loss.

Why one ledger feeds two different reports

Sales and purchase records support both compliance processes, but a VAT return is not a profit calculation and a Corporate Tax return is not a summary of VAT paid. Revenue timing, exempt or zero-rated treatment, recoverable input tax, non-deductible costs, capital assets and accounting adjustments can all cause differences.

    Useful controls for small businesses

    • Maintain separate VAT control accounts and Corporate Tax workpapers.
    • Reconcile VAT return totals to sales and purchase ledgers each period.
    • Reconcile year-end accounts to the Corporate Tax computation.
    • Document differences rather than forcing the two reports to match.
    • Keep separate deadline calendars for VAT periods and Corporate Tax periods.

The FTA confirms that Corporate Tax does not replace VAT; a business may have obligations under both regimes. Assess registration and filing duties independently, even if a business has low profit or no Corporate Tax payable.
