Accounting Profit vs UAE Corporate Taxable Income: Key Adjustments

For many UAE businesses, the accounting profit or loss in the financial statements is the starting point for determining Corporate Taxable Income. It is not always the final number. The Corporate Tax Law requires adjustments for specific income, expenses, reliefs and other prescribed items.

    Build a clear reconciliation

Keep a working paper that starts with accounting profit and lists each adjustment, its amount, the legal or guidance basis, and the supporting document. Common review areas include exempt income, non-deductible expenditure, depreciation or amortisation, provisions, related-party transactions and prior-period corrections. The treatment depends on the facts and applicable rules; a book entry by itself does not establish deductibility.

    Make the process repeatable

    • Keep the trial balance and signed financial statements for the same tax period.
    • Link adjustments to invoices, contracts, schedules or board approvals.
    • Document why a cost was incurred for the business and how mixed-use costs were apportioned.
    • Have a reviewer check the reconciliation before the return is filed.

Good records do not replace tax analysis, but they make that analysis testable and reduce avoidable omissions. The FTA explains that taxable income is accounting net profit or loss after adjustments required by law in its Corporate Tax FAQs.

  • UAE Small Business Relief in 2026: Eligibility and Filing Still Matter

UAE Small Business Relief in 2026: Eligibility and Filing Still Matter

Small Business Relief (SBR) can reduce the Corporate Tax compliance burden for eligible UAE resident persons. Under the current FTA summary, a resident person may elect for the relief for a tax period where revenue is no more than AED 3 million in that period and in all previous tax periods, subject to the detailed conditions. The relief is available only for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026 under the relevant Ministerial Decision.

    Important limits

SBR is an election, not an automatic exemption from every Corporate Tax obligation. A Qualifying Free Zone Person and a member of a multinational enterprise group with consolidated revenue above AED 3.15 billion cannot elect under the FTA summary. Choosing SBR also affects the availability of other exemptions, reliefs and deductions for that period, and transfer-pricing obligations are not erased: the arm’s-length principle still applies.

    Do not skip the return

The FTA has specifically reminded eligible taxpayers that they must submit the required simplified Corporate Tax Return within the statutory deadline. Keep revenue calculations and supporting records, test prior-period eligibility, make the election correctly, and diarise the filing date. If a previous period exceeded the threshold, assess eligibility carefully rather than relying on the current year alone.

Read the FTA Small Business Relief conditions and its September 2026 filing reminder. Rules are period-specific; get advice if your circumstances are complex.

  • UAE Corporate Tax Explained: The 0% and 9% Rates for Businesses

UAE Corporate Tax Explained: The 0% and 9% Rates for Businesses

UAE Corporate Tax is calculated on taxable income, not simply on a company’s turnover or cash balance. In general, taxable income up to AED 375,000 is subject to a 0% rate and taxable income above that amount is subject to 9%, subject to the law, relevant decisions and any available reliefs or credits.

Revenue and taxable income are different

A business can have substantial sales but modest taxable income after legitimate business costs and applicable tax adjustments. Conversely, accounting profit is not automatically the final taxable amount: the Corporate Tax Law requires adjustments for specified items. The AED 375,000 band is a taxable-income threshold, not a VAT registration threshold and not a revenue allowance.

    A practical way to prepare

    • Close the accounting records for the correct tax period.
    • Reconcile revenue, expenses, bank balances and receivables/payables.
    • Identify tax adjustments and keep evidence for each material treatment.
    • Check whether a specific relief, exemption, foreign tax credit or Free Zone rule is relevant.

For illustration only, if taxable income after the required adjustments were AED 500,000 and no other relief or credit applied, the first AED 375,000 would be at 0% and the remaining AED 125,000 at 9%. This is not a tax calculation for any particular entity.
